froggy went a courtin'

These early days of parenthood are interesting ones. It's amazing how you can spend all day being too busy to shower, or eat, or even brush your teeth. But it's a different kind of business, one where you have nothing to show for your day at its end. It's amazing to think that it takes so much time to feed and change and hold a little baby, swaddling, unswaddling, finding lost socks, kissing tiny feet, and singing "froggy went a courtin'" over and over.

I've been a little blue, because I always feel gross and unproductive when I fail to get ready for the day or really do anything tangible. But then I realized that singing "froggy went a courtin'" over and over again is actually really important. Because it means I'm taking these days slowly and spending all my time loving my little baby, which is not only what she deserves, but it's exactly what I should be doing.

So you'll have to excuse me for another baby-centric post. But these days I'm living a baby-centric life, which is exactly the kind of life I should be living.

P.S. I looked up the lyrics to "froggy went a courtin'" because I could only remember a few of the verses from when my grandma used to sing it to me when I was little. Man, it's a really long song. And I totally don't remember the morbid and depressing ending. I don't think I'll be singing that part to Nolie. She can wait until she's older to be disturbed by it when she googles it so she can sing it to her own baby someday.

I would love to tell you it gets easier, but well it doesn't. Just make time for yourself. And remember, you will never gets some of the first back so those trump all the looking good for me most days. I have a friends whose son is going in for open heart surgery, he is 3, and she has told me to love every minute of the little ones.
